SOPA update

Post by Joccaren on Tue Jan 17, 2012 11:18 am

So, just making sure everyone is aware, but it seems SOPA has been shelved for the moment. This means we don't have to go on strike, and that the Internet is safe for a while longer.
Of course, we still have to worry about PIPA, but we've at least dropped one of the buggers.
So, celebrate this glorious day on which one of the stupidest laws around was stopped.

I seriously doubted either piece of legislation would've passed through Congress, and I was certain it wouldn't be passed by the White House. I still stand by that today.

This.

Even if it did, I figured there would be a riot of some kind.

Legislation that is "shelved" (on that note, I don't have any confirmation from my news sources that it has) is typically considered dead. Permanently. And again, the fact that the American people know what the SOPA and Protect IP Acts are, you can expect legislators to eventually realize that their careers will be in peril if they even consider voting for either. Which does mean this will be used as good political weaponry come the next election season. Plus, even given Obama's track record of caving into Congressional pressure, there's no way he'd sign these awfully unconstitutional acts into law, because he probably knows full well that this could be used as weaponry against his 2012 campaign. If you're still concerned, both acts are blatant violations of the First Amendment and probably some weird interstate commerce loophole somewhere in other laws, which means the Supreme Court will end up repealing it as soon as someone brings it up to court.

And bad news, strike is back on. Move to Feb now though.
The bastard who originally proposed the bill has decided that he'll bring it back up in February.

F***ing hell.
So, we're safe till Feb, but then we need to tell them to F*** off again.

Why are politicians so stupid?

The NDAA is the 2012 (that is, this year) military budget that had an indefinite detention clause slipped in. It was signed on his desk on December 31, 2011. Now, I'm not sure there's a significant distinction between the end of the year of 2011 and the end of the military's fiscal year of 2011, but had it not been signed at that very moment, it may have been possible that there would be a freeze on military spending (disastrous) as 2011's NDAA expired. Now, I skimmed through the Obama Administration's press release on the signing of the NDAA, and they didn't mention Congress wrestling in the bill at the last possible hour, but I still have my suspicions. Anyhow,

And bad news, strike is back on. Move to Feb now though.

Why are politicians so stupid?
There's a terrible lot of short-term laws coming to a close and being re-enacted for short periods at these particular few months of Congress (eg. unemployment benefit extensions), so it seems everything is being done on very short notice.

And I don't support the toxic common notion that politicians, who are elected by the people, are outright stupid. If you don't like what your representatives are doing, then vote them out, it's that simple. Politicians are what the public believes them to be. If we have some confidence for once in these four decades of spiraling cynicism in (insert your country here), then maybe there can be a return to the times where statesmen were truly expected to cooperate and collaborate to make (your country) a better place. (I should point out that (your country) is still likely in a better position than it was in the 60s, despite the global decline in confidence in government...)

Unless you live in some dictatorship like China or North Korea, in which case, your opinion doesn't matter.

TL;DR. Sorry buddy.

In other news, since SOPA did not pass that means Justin Beiber fans can still spread the plague that is his music across the internet. If the bill did pass, you have to admit, it would ALMOST be worth it.
