try kicking the computer, strangely mine fixes itself (used to, havn't had this problem in years) and it usually gives it a manual start :D

either that or it moves stuff around :P

mimmyjambo wrote:Despite my vast computer knowledge I am unable to fix my little c***-face of a gaming computer.

This is what happens when I start it up, as I described to a friend of mine who is a fellow computer geek:

...the power actually does come on, all the fans start etc but nothing else happens. Nothing is processed or anything. The boot does not start. There is no POST beep. The CD drive is unresponsive. The video output says 'No signal' on my monitor, which as you know means that there's no video being sent to the monitor. It just sits there with the fans spinning round and nothing else happening. As I said [this was in a previous email to him], all the wire connections are fine. Again, as I said [this was also in a previous email to him], I've tried the RAM stick trick trying each stick in each slot. It's either that ALL of my RAM sticks are fried or that the RAM isn't the problem. I really hope I don't have to replace any parts or that'll almost definitely be Christmas gone.

Like the topic title says.

DEAR GOD HELP!

PS: Yes I have done a massive cleanout, there is very little dust or dirt etc anywhere inside it.
PPS: Please don't tell me all of my RAM sticks have fried or I need a new PSU. In fact, please don't tell me I need to buy anything to fix this. I'm f***ing skint.

  • Check to see if there are and cracked components on the motherboard.
  • Try disconnecting your front USB ports from the motherboard. If they are bent downwards (such as with a usb in it and someone steps on it) it can short circuit causing the computer to stop.
  • Take out the ram and rub the pins downwards multiple times, If one of them is even slightly dusty/corroded it can cause this.
  • Try resetting your CMOS, several articles are online.

  • Worst case scenario, its a bad power supply. If you cant get the computer to work by the end of tomorrow, disconnect ALL power from it, as anything entering the computer could be fed wrongly by it to other components, which may have already happened, in which case R.I.P. The good thing? Power supplys are cheap! YAY. The bad news? all the part they just done blow'd up are not.

Thanks for the ideas Kairus. Won't quote them all :p

One thing you've missed: The Lithium Cell in the motherboard. Apparently this can cause problems like what I've been experiencing when it's dead. They're very cheap, some can even be bought for less than a pound, so it won't cost much to replace even if it's not causing the problem.

And BTW: the current state of my system is that it has nothing plugged into it except power. All the USB slots are in good shape.

Will try what you said about cleaning the RAM pins along with a new Lithium cell which I'm hoping I might be able to buy today.

Hopefully this works and it is either corroded circuitry or the battery. If it isn't looks like we will have to spend a bit more time and money on it :/ For the meanwhile disconnect power also, if it is a bad power supply, we don't want to to damage other components (yes, it can even while the computer is off).

Fix'd it Kairus, as title and OP now says (to avoid double posting :p).

The lithium cell needed replacing, and the RAM needed cleaning. Also 2 sticks had to be swapped round.

10 hours of work for that....

Reaver, I found another way to fix your problem: Run a big magnet back and forth across your HDD. It will solve all your problems.

Somehow, just somehow, one or two of my brain cells are telling me that's not such a good idea.
